Warner Bros. Confirms Jason Momoa Is Aquaman
Rumors that Jason Momoa would portray Aquaman sprouted shortly after it was revealed that he was in talks with Warner Bros. to join the comic book-based film. It has now been confirmed that he will indeed play the King of the Seven Seas. The studio announced the news during a recent conference call with shareholders.
During an interview last year with Variety, DC Entertainment exec Geoff Johns called Arthur Curry “a priority character for the company. There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the most well-known characters among superheroes and in popular culture,” he said.
Zack Snyder all but confirmed that the Aquaman character would appear in upcoming DC films when he called in to CBS’s “Stoney and Bill Show” in Detroit to argue that some people are short-changing Curry, who is actually quite powerful. “The cool thing with Aquaman is his trident—people don’t realize that can actually cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. And he’s super strong, because of course he can exist at these super deep depths, so when he comes up here he’s like crazy strong,” said Snyder.
Though we haven’t seen the character on film, there’s a good chance his presence has already been felt. During a recent “Meet the Movie Press” podcast, reporter Jeff Sneider said that in Man of Steel, when Superman rescued workers from a burning oil rig, he himself was rescued (off-screen) by a team of whales, who of course are often called upon for assistance by Aquaman.
Fans should get their first good look at the hero in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which he reportedly will feud with Superman over the destruction he caused to Metropolis. Then he’ll get his own standalone film, which is slated to hit theaters July 27, 2018.
According to reports, two writers, Gangster Squad‘s Will Beall and 300‘s Kurt Johnstad, have been brought in to create scripts for the film, and the better one will be put into production. The movie is expected to be a family affair. Reports indicate that Mera, Aquaman’s wife; Orm, his evil half-brother; supervillain Black Manta and the highly impressionable team known as The Trench will all be featured in the forthcoming solo flick.
