Jason Statham Heads to TV for Drama ‘Viva La Madness’
Gaumont International Television has announced that Jason Statham (Transporter, Furious 7) will star in the upcoming TV drama thriller Viva La Madness, a series based on J. J. Connolly’s book of the same title. The novel is the next installment of the author’s Layer Cake, which was adapted for a feature film in 2004.
The story follows an anonymous protagonist who longs for his former life of crime. Still a wanted man back home, he is currently stranded in the Caribbean, where he teams up with two London gangsters: Sonny King, described as menacing, and his paranoid partner, Roy “Twitchy” Burns. Although it is categorized as a drama, this fast-paced series will have no shortage of humor. Viva La Madness is an appropriate title for a project that takes place in a crazy world but somehow makes sense.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted Gaumont International TV CEO Katie O’Connell Marsh saying, “Viva La Madness, with its riveting characters and twisting storyline, is a volatile cocktail of action and comedy that only J. J. Connolly can create,” and adding that Statham “brings such strength and credibility to his characters but also has an effortless shade of vulnerability that gives him so much dimension on screen.”
Connolly is set to write the script and will serve as an executive producer alongside Statham and Steven Chasman. The project is still in search of a network.
Statham’s big screen career continues to flourish. He recently completed work on the crime drama Mechanic: Resurrection, due out Aug. 26, 2016; and he is about to reprise his role as Deckard Shaw in the highly anticipated Furious 8, in theaters April 14, 2017.
