The Jeremy Lin Workout
Like most of the sports world, we’ve caught Linsanity. As we’ve watched Jeremy Lin’s countless YouTube highlights and followed the New York Knicks point guard as he’s dominated the league, we’ve found it more and more incredible that he was able to ride the bench for so long while maintaining elite skills and conditioning. What has he been doing all this time?
Recenly, Lin sat down with Greatist.com to talk about his workout routine. If you want to train like Lin, try out some of his workout secrets below:
High Reps
Because Lin wants to build endurance for an 82-game season, he focuses on high reps during weightlifting. He’ll often alternate between one day of heavy lifting and a light day, where he’ll do 20 to 40 reps of light weight per set. Lin also told Greatist.com that his time in the gym is devoted to increasing his vertical, lateral speed and agility, leading to exercises like:
- Squats
- Lunges
- Deadlifts
- Hang Cleans
Yoga
Lin has joined a growing list of NBA players who use yoga to help them stay healthy through the long basketball season. “[Yoga] for me is huge in terms of flexibility and core strength, which prevents me from getting injured,” he says. Start your own yoga workout with these poses for athletes. (And check out Flexibility Fridays for more athlete-focused yoga poses.)
Basketball Cardio
Like many athletes, Lin can’t stand traditional cardio. So instead of getting on the treadmill for an hour, he’ll get to work on the court by himself. “I’ll do a lot of one-on-one moves and start at half court, come down and do a move at the three-point line and go down and try to dunk it. And I’ll just do that over and over with different moves for like an hour and a half. By the time I’m done with that, I’m pretty dead,” he says. As long as you’re able to sustain a high heart rate, feel free to get creative with your cardio.
