Kawhi Leonard’s College Teammates Reveal His Bizarrely Hilarious Trash Talk
Kawhi Leonard is a silent assassin.
The Toronto Raptors superstar has long been a man of few words, preferring to let his game do the talking. After the 2013 NBA Finals, Dwyane Wade said he had no idea how Leonard’s voice sounded because he didn’t hear him utter one word during the entire seven-game series. However, thanks to a recent article by The Athletic’s Jayson Jenks, we have proof that Kawhi has in fact talked some junk at some point in his life. It’s just a little bit…different from how others guy do it.
From Jenks’ story, which interviewed several former teammates, coaches and managers who interacted with Leonard during his two sensational seasons at San Diego State:
If you find me playing pick-up basketball at any point in the next decade, I’ll be the guy shouting “board man gets paid” anytime a misfire ricochets into my grasp. Leonard was indeed a “board man” at SDSU, as he averaged an absurd 10.6 rebounds per game in his final college season. He pulled down 7.3 rebounds per game this year, the highest total of his eight-season NBA career. He’s expected to sign a max contract this summer. Coincidence? I think not.
Another delightful anecdote from Jenks’ piece is that Leonard often brought his own lamp into the SDSU gym to shoot after-hours because the facility’s lightbox would be locked. Now I’m just imagining Leonard rebounding for himself in a dim gym next to a floor lamp alternately muttering “bucket” and “board man gets paid.”
