Kyrie Irving Turning Heads in Vegas Against Team USA
With the Summer Olympics in London only a couple of weeks away, Team USA is getting ready at their training camp in Las Vegas. Led by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and other NBA superstars are preparing to go overseas by battling against the “select team,” made up of young, up-and-coming NBA stars.
One of those young players is giving the superstars the business.
Cleveland Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving is the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year after a season in which he averaged 18 points, five assists and four rebounds per game; but he’s performed above and beyond what anyone expected in Vegas. Irving has been showing off exceptional handles, as evidenced by some of the video that has leaked out from recent Team USA scrimmages. And then there are the quotes coming out of the Team USA camp, like this one from Jerry Colangelo (from Sheridan Hoops):
“Kyrie Irving is a player that literally you could move from one court to the other court,” Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo said, referring to shooting drills that have the Olympic team and the select team on adjacent courts. “He’s that far advanced in terms of his talent, it appears. He’s made a good showing here. He had a terrific rookie season in the NBA, and certainly he will be one of the leading candidates going forward.”
See for yourself. That’s Kobe and Durant reaching on the spinning Irving, who is wearing number 23.
What do you think? Is Irving already the next best young point guard in the NBA? Tell us what you think on Facebook or on Twitter.
