Fox has ordered a pilot for a music drama from high profile writer and director Lee Daniels, who’s best known on the small screen for his work on the hit series Empire.

The upcoming series, titled Star, will be written, executive produced and directed by Daniels. The network was impressed enough by the idea for the project to pick up the pilot based merely on Daniels’ outline.

Fox TV Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden said, “Like Empire, it’s set against the backdrop of the music business but from a different perspective.”

In addition to his work for television, Daniels is an accomplished filmmaker, having directed the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2013 biographical drama The Butler. It’s logical that Fox should want more music-themed shows from Daniels, considering that Empire‘s popularity and exceptionally high ratings breathed new life into the network.

One important difference between the two projects is that Empire centers on record company executives, whereas Star will be told from the perspective of the artists.

Although few details are being revealed at this point, Walden did say that one of the characters would be coming out of poverty, and that much of the drama would be shown from Daniels’ point of view, which she said, “lends some authenticity.”

This series will join a number of other music industry TV shows, including HBO’s Vinyl, which is being produced by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger.

Collaborating with Daniels on Star is Tom Donaghy (The Whole Truth), who will serve as a writer and executive producer on the pilot.
