Liam Neeson will step into the role of General Douglas MacArthur for Operation Chromite, an upcoming Korean War film whose title is the code name for the Battle of Inchon, fought on Sept. 15, 1950, a few months after the war broke out. The goal of the operation, a surprise attack by U.N. forces on Inchon, a South Korean harbor city under the control of the Communist North Korean military, was to retake the city.

The war lasted from 1950 to 1953, but this battle, led by MacArthur, was an important turning point for the U.N.-backed South Korean forces. The story will focus on eight South Korean soldiers who helped reverse the tide against the Communists in the midst of a covert operation prior to the battle’s amphibious attack.

Directing the film is Korean filmmaker John H. Lee, a.k.a. Lee Jae-han. The screenplay was written by Lee Man-hee, who previously collaborated with Lee on another Korean war drama, 71: Into the Fire .

South Korean production company Taewon Entertainment is producing. According to The Guardian, “It is not clear whether Neeson will film his scenes in English or Korean, though it seems likely the film itself will be shot in Korean.”

It is unusual for Hollywood actors like Liam Neeson to be cast in Korean films.

Production on Operation Chromite is expected to begin this September. The film is set for release on June 25, 2016, the 66th anniversary of the breakout of the Korean War.
