Rap News Rundown: Lil Wayne, Game, Kanye West, Daz Dillinger
Last week, Lil Wayne and others were recognized by the AMAs, Game picked at an old scab, Kanye West reconciled with Jimmy Kimmel, and Daz Dillinger took on Rockstar Games over GTA V.
Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar Nominated for AMAs
The nominees for the 2013 American Music Awards were revealed last week. Lil Wayne is up for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, but he’s facing competition from Jay-Z and newcomers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, both of whom are also up for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, along with Kendrick Lamar for his debut record.
Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake are nominees for Artist of the Year. Rockers Imagine Dragons seem to be a lock for the New Artist of the Year award. Robin Thicke’s infectious hit “Blurred Lines” is nominated for Single of the Year, along with country duo Florida Georgia Line’s song “Cruise” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s “Thrift Shop.”
Game Disses 50 Cent on New Mixtape
It’s beginning to feel like 2005. A few days after reminiscing about the beginnings of his beef with former collaborator 50 Cent, California rapper Game released a song dissing the music mogul. On “Hollywood,” a bonus track featured on his latest mixtape, OKE, Game seems to squash rumors about a reunion with G-Unit. The track is puzzling because the MC recently seemed open to the idea of linking back up with Fif. “If it makes sense dollar-wise, as far as securing the future of my family financially, then I’d get back with 50,” said Game during an interview with DJ Skee earlier this year.
Maybe the contract offer was low?
Kanye West Appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live
Kanye sat down for an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, just a few days after targeting the comedian in a Twitter tirade. It was all so sudden and strange that Kimmel felt the need to deny that it was an elaborate ruse to get the public’s attention.
West fussed about the inconveniences of his fame, bragged about his musical superiority and explained his reaction to Kimmel’s skit. “I’m not running for office, I’m just here to make good music, make people feel good… for me, I’m a creative genius and there’s no other way to word it, and I know you’re not supposed to say those things about yourself,” he said.
Though aware that people are looking for humility, he added, “I’m totally weird and I’m totally honest and I’m totally inappropriate at times.”
Daz Dillinger Wants GTA 5 Pulled from Shelves Over Songs
Daz Dillinger has filed legal papers threatening the joy of every Grand Theft Auto lover who hasn’t gotten around to purchasing GTA 5 yet. According to the Dogg Pound rapper, Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive Software, came to him and offered an extremely low bid for the use of his two songs, “C-Walk” and “Nothin’ But the Cavi Hit.” After declining the offer, he was surprised to hear the tracks included in the game anyway. His lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to the companies, requesting that all remaining copies of the game be pulled from shelves and destroyed.
“[This is about] respecting an artist’s work. Rockstar didn’t do that here, and I can’t let them get away with it,” said Daz to TMZ.
