Louis C.K. Will Star in and Direct Movie ‘I’m a Cop’
Comedian Louis C.K., star of the popular FX show Louie, will return to the big screen to write, direct and star in the film I’m a Cop. In recent years, he has taken on small acting roles in feature films like American Hustle, but it has been almost 15 years since he directed a movie.
I’m a Cop centers on a depressed middle-aged man who has always lived in the shadow of his accomplished mother, a retired police officer. Although he has never wanted a career as an officer himself, he has been spending time as a volunteer policeman. When his mother dies, the man decides to become a real cop due to her lingering influence over him.
C.K.’s attempt at directing the 2001 Chris Rock comedy Pooty Tang, which he also wrote, ended when the studio took him off the project during post-production. But the Emmy award-winning comedian seems far from bitter about the experience; instead he focuses on the positive. He talked to The Hollywood Reporter about what he has learned since then, particularly about dealing with other people, saying: “A lot of what makes this kind of stuff work is empathy.”
He also discussed the difference in his attitude toward film versus TV: “I don’t feel like I need anyone to tell me anything with a TV show, because I know exactly what I’m doing; but I’d be arrogant to think that I can take someone’s $8 million and just turn in a movie,” he said. “Movies are different. There’s a permanency to them.”
Producing the feature is high-profile filmmaker Scott Rudin (Moneyball, The Social Network and The Grand Budapest Hotel). Working alongside Rudin are Louie producers Blair Breard and Dave Becky.
