Louisiana State University freshman Ben Simmons was ruled ineligible for the John R. Wooden Award on Saturday because he did not meet the award’s academic criteria.

The Wooden Award requires candidates to have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 since the start of their enrollment. Tigers head coach Johnny Jones told ESPN that Simmons was not put on the award ballot because he was not certified by LSU.

Simmons is a potential No. 1 NBA draft pick in this year’s NBA Draft. The freshman phenom is averaging 19.7 points, 11.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game on 56.6 percent shooting.

Ruled ineligible for the most prestigious award in college basketball, Simmons has other things on his mind.

“All I care about is winning,” said Simmons, also reported by ESPN.

LSU (18-12, 11-6 SEC) is currently in third place in the SEC behind Texas A&M and Kentucky. The conference tournament will be held March 9-13 in Nashville.

Though Simmons cares most about team success, he’ll need to improve in the classroom for his team to thrive. Simmons was benched in an 81-65 loss to Tennessee in February, despite leading his team in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game.
