Matt Damon reunites with writer/director Kenneth Lonergan for the gripping family drama, Manchester-by-the-Sea. Damon plays a Boston plumber who returns to his hometown after his brother passes away. While caring for his brother’s 16-year-old son, Damon’s character struggles to hold himself together, as he is haunted by a dark secret from his past. If the plot sounds familiar, it’s probably because the story is similar to Lonergan’s 2000 film, You Can Count on Me, starring Mark Ruffalo.
Lonergan is directing this film from his own screenplay. Damon and Lonergan last worked together on the critically acclaimed Margaret, released in 2011. Manchester-by-the-Sea is being viewed as a motion picture comeback for Lonergan, who in recent years has been better known for his stage work, including the Broadway revival of his play, This Is Our Youth, which starred Damon.
Damon is planning to squeeze this movie into his busy schedule this fall, right before filming is to begin on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller The Martian in November. His adventure flick Interstellar is also due to premiere in November.
