Michael Bennett Has Some Harsh Words About Steph Curry’s $2,250 Basketball Camp
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett is getting ready to kick off his fourth annual football camp in Oahu, Hawaii, the island where his parents grew up. Bennett’s camp is free for participants. It’s an important event for Bennett, who has spent much of his career in Seattle embracing the place of his parent’s birth as his own, even moving there in the off-season after he got married. And because of that, Bennett, who has never been one to mince words, has some issues with a fellow sports star’s Hawaiian-based camp that costs quite abit more than his own.

Bennett took aim at Stephen Curry’s recent four-day basketball camp, held on the campus of BYU-Hawaii, which came with a price tag of $2,250. The camp was for kids ages 9 to 16, and included about 90 kids from Hawaii. Here’s what Curry said about his camp before it kicked off last week:
“To bring it down here to Hawaii, I know there’s a lot of Warriors supporters down here,” Curry told KHON2. “They get to watch all of our games with the time difference and all of that, so being able to come down and share, to embrace Dub Nation in Hawaii, I think that’s a really cool experience.”

A clip from the camp went viral. It shows Curry going around to campers’ dorm rooms pretending to deliver Girl Scout Cookies. The kids open their doors and completely freak out when they see the reigning MVP standing in front of them.
But Bennett wasn’t feeling the good vibes coming out of Curry’s event.
“I see a lot of different athletes come through Hawaii, whether it’s Steph Curry or whoever it is,” Bennett said. “They all come here and it makes me mad, because I live in this community and I understand this community—that there’s so many kids who can’t afford to pay such a high amount of money. In my mind it’s like, how much money do you need before you start giving back for free? And I think a lot of athletes should start focusing on that.”
“If you do have a camp and you charge money for it, you need to make sure that money that you take from this community, you give back to the kids that are paying for the camp. These are the kids that live here. When you leave Hawaii and you go back to wherever you’re at, or you come here and you go back from this vacation, you leave with a piece of paradise, but these people still live here every day.”
Curry hasn’t yet responded to Bennett’s comments, and it remains to be seen whether he will. The Michael Bennett Football Camp kicks off on Saturday at the University of Hawaii.
