A remake of the popular sci-fi film Alien is in the works at Fox with Neil Blomkamp (District 9; Elysium) committed to direct. Blomkamp recently made the announcement via Instagram, posting concept art from the project and saying: “Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien.”
Blomkamp will also write the screenplay. There are reports that Sigourney Weaver will be cast. The actress memorably starred as Ellen Ripley in the 1979 version, which became her breakthrough film.
Iconic filmmaker Ridley Scott directed the original movie. Scott’s company, Scott Free Productions, will produce the upcoming movie.
Talk of a reboot has been circulating for awhile, but at one point, according to Scott, there were difficulties. He said the problem he had was with the film industry, and he was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter saying: “There’s a high possibility, a high degree of chance that it happens that I go back and try to get Alien made. Fox, they would make it, like, tomorrow. I love movies, but Hollywood itself is a difficult animal to negotiate.”
The plotline for the new film has not been revealed. The original followed a team of workers who travel to an unexplored planet on a vessel called Nostromo after receiving a distress call. Upon returning home, they realize they have brought back a deadly bioform.
The so-far-untitled Alien reboot is expected to be released in 2017.
