Sneaker fan? Film buff? 1980s aficionado? Then you might remember the release of the Nike Air Mag in 2011—a close approximation of the sneakers worn by Marty McFly in 1989’s Back To The Future Part II. While the shoes looked similar to the kicks McFly wore in the film, they were missing one crucial element: self-tying laces (known as “power laces” in the movie).

According to Nike footwear designer Tinker Hatfield, the future is nearly at hand. In an interview with Sole Collector in New Orleans, Hatfield made it clear that he plans to make power laces a reality by next year.

“Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!” said Hatfield. Fans of the movie will note that 2015 was the year McFly traveled to in Back to the Future Part II.

This isn’t the first hint Nike has dropped that it aims to bring power laces to life. In a 2011 commercial for the Air Mags, the brand claimed that power laces will be available in 2015.

At the moment, we have no word on what sneakers will accompany the power laces. But if they’re anything like the Air Mags, you can expect to pay a premium. Those kicks sold for thousands a pair.
