It’s been a long, long time since a new video game console came from a company other than Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. But thanks to a community fund-raising project, we may have a new contender, and it’s not one of the usual gaming suspects.
The idea for the Ouya console was to create an open machine that anyone could reconfigure. By basing it on the Android platform, its creators are opening development up to anyone, not just the biggest video gamer companies. They’re encouraging hackers to mess with the machine, something that would definitely void your warranty if you tried it with a more established console. Also, Ouya is guaranteeing that at least some elements of gameplay for each game will be free. Head over to this great post from Kotaku for a more detailed look at the console itself.
To secure enough cash to make the Ouya a reality, developers needed to raise $950,000 through Kickstarter. They met that goal in an absurd eight hours. Funding is now nearly $4 million and still climbing.
So it looks like we’ll be getting a new console early next year with a $99 price tag. Developers are promising a target release of March 2013.
