Rap News Rundown (Feb. 1): Rick Ross, Chris Brown & Lil B
Rappers spent the majority of this week dodging bullets—literally and figuratively. (Gun shots this week, jail time last week. Guess who was sentenced to two months last week?)
Drive-By Shooters Target Rick Ross
As Rick Ross drove his Rolls Royce through the streets of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with an unidentified female passenger, drive-by shooters targeted the vehicle. According to reports, dozens of bullets were fired, but none of them struck the MMG head or his passenger. While attempting to escape the gunfire, Ross crashed his vehicle into a nearby building. In direct response to the incident, the Miami-based rapper reportedly hired 24-hour armed security. However, Ross has not broken his silence over the matter.
Chris Brown & Frank Ocean Involved in Brawl
Singers Chris Brown and Frank Ocean were involved in a brawl over the weekend at Westlake Studio in Los Angeles, reports TMZ. According to the site, the incident was likely triggered by an incident in the parking lot. Details are unclear, as there are conflicting reports, but one witness has come forward suggesting that Brown threw the first punch.
Apparently the two rappers met in the parking lot of the studio. Brown extended his hand to Ocean, who responded by laughing. The slight offended Brown who—known for anger management issues—reacted by punching Ocean. The fight then escalated, with both crews engaging in the argument, and the brawl spilled into the lobby of the studio. When the police arrived, only Ocean remained at the scene. Police are currently investigating, and charges may be filed.
Lil B and Joey Bada$$ Diss Each Other
Young rappers Lil B and Joey Bada$$ took jabs at each other over wax and Twitter earlier this week. The beef started when Joey repeated a rhyme from his fallen friend Capital Steez that questioned Lil B’s talent. In “Survival Tactics,” the late MC raps, “They say hard work pays off/Well tell the Based God don’t quit his day job.”
The Cali rapper responded to the diss by releasing a song titled “I’m the Bad A$$,” in which threatens to turn Joey’s life into a “mystery.” At first the New York rapper seemed okay with letting things sit. He even took to Twitter to thank Lil B for taking the time to dedicate a song to him. But he soon changed his tune and unleashed “Don’t Quit Your Day Job.” Thus far, B hasn’t responded and Joey insists that he is now “done with the topic.” But do these things ever really die?
