Russell Brand Documentary Debuting at SXSW
Comedian Russell Brand’s new documentary, Brand: A Second Coming, will make its debut at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival on March 13. The movie explores the turbulent journey of the entertainer, who is becoming as well known for his activism as his comedy.
We learn about the ups and downs of the 39-year-old’s complex life, from his battle with drug addiction to his success on the big screen and his controversial political views, which are detailed in his new book, Revolution. In the book, Brand advocates the dismantling of organized capitalism and centralized political power.
The documentary was directed by the award-winning Ondi Timoner, whose documentaries We Live in Public (2009) and Dig (2004) both earned the prestigious Sundance Grand Jury Prize.
Janet Pierson, the chief curator of SXSW, said the movie “knocked us out with its humor, insight and raw energy, pulling back the curtain on a truly passionate figure as he grapples with fame, influence and where we are as a 21st Century society.”
Many other exciting projects are on tap for the festival, including the highly anticipated A.I. thriller Ex Machina, starring Oscar Isaacson. Another thriller, The Invitation, about a haunted man attending a frightening reunion with old friends, is set to make its world premiere. One of the keynote speakers for the event is actor, director and hip-hop icon RZA.
Brand has made several documentary films in recent years, including some that focused on drug addiction, such as 2014’s Russell Brand: End the Drugs War.
