By Sarah Gearhart
Whether real-life or Hollywood-created, stories of athletes and teams teach lessons you can apply to your own life. This fall, the big screen will feature three solid flicks you can use to keep your business right.
INVINCIBLE
Aug. 22/Walt Disney Pictures
What are the chances that a player could earn his first NFL roster spot at the age of 30? Not good—especially if you’re a down-on-your-luck substitute teacher who’s working part-time as a bartender. But Vince Papale [Mark Wahlberg] did it. In Dick Vermeil’s first year as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, he hosted an unprecedented open tryout. Papale couldn’t miss the opportunity to realize his dreams. Inspired by true events, Invincible is the story of one man who beat the odds to live every fan’s fantasy.
GRIDIRON GANG
Sept. 15/Columbia Pictures
Gridiron Gang chronicles the true story of camp probation officer Sean Porter (The Rock) as he coaches football to a group of juvie hall teenagers. With the help of Malcolm Moore (Xzibit), Porter uses on-field instruction to teach the players about social responsibility and self-respect. But before his dudes get a chance to play, Porter has to overcome unrelenting resistance from his boss and skeptical high school coaches who don’t want to take on the rag-tag team. Eventually, the juvies gets their chance, making their way to the league championship game.
CROSSOVER
Sept. 1/Sony Pictures
Instead of using his basketball talent to go pro, Noah Cruise (Wesley Jonathan) wants to earn a scholly to UCLA, where he can study pre-med. Noah’s trouble-making best friend, Tech (Anthony Mackie), has less ambition; all he wants is his GED and an underground contest win against his arrogant rival, Jewelz. Both boys’ lives take a turn when they fall for two local girls and leave their passions behind with an ill-fated trip to L.A.
