It looks like the film gods are smiling down on us. Sony and Marvel Studios have signed a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), meaning we’ll get to see Spidey alongside at least one of the Avengers in the near future.

Without getting too far into the weeds, Marvel will get first dibs on the web-slinging superhero, then Sony will take “a new creative direction” in a franchise centered around Spider-Man, starting with a 2017 stand-alone. Sony will maintain financial and creative control. The two studios are also reportedly “exploring opportunities to integrate” other characters into Spidey’s world.

“Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in a statement. “I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

Though neither studio specified which film Spider-Man will first appear in, it’s believed he’ll make his debut in Captain America: Civil War. Expected to hit theaters on May 6, 2016, that movie would easily set up the character for a full film the next year. Sony and Marvel have already announced the release date for “the new Spider-Man” as July 28, 2017.

It’s unlikely Andrew Garfield will reprise his role since both studios are looking to completely remake the hero. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 grossed over $700 million at the box office, but was an overall disappointment critically and financially.
