Spider-Man Universe Will Feature a Female Superhero Movie
Sony has decided to add a movie to the Spider-Man franchise series that will feature a female superhero. Mystery over exactly who the crime fighter will be has produced some interesting speculation in the media. The characters Silver Sable, Black Cat and, of course, Spider-Woman have been tossed around as possibilities for the heroine of the future girl-power flick.
The script is being written by Lisa Joy, who has a diverse and impressive list of writing credits. In addition to her work on the TV series Burn Notice and Pushing Daisies, Joy also wrote an extremely imaginative screenplay for the sci-fi thriller Reminiscence, which was sold to Legendary last year.
Avi Arad (Iron Man) and Matt Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man) will produce the picture.
This seems like a perfect time for a female superhero project, considering the blockbuster success of the action film Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson, which debuted at $43.9 million. There is clearly a market for action pics featuring female protagonists. With the recent news that Marvel plans to launch a comic book about a female Thor, it is apparent that the trend is spreading across media. Pop culture has long reflected changes in society, so the emergence of powerful women in the action genre is not surprising.
This movie could be just the impetus the Spider-Man franchise needs after the less-than-impressive ticket sales of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this summer.
