STACK Plays God of War: Origins
Kratos, the protagonist of the wildly popular God of War franchise, is one of the most interesting characters in the history of gaming (and he’d make a heck of a linebacker!). His story is tragic and his adventures are thrilling. PlayStation 3 console owners will soon have the opportunity to enjoy PSP classics Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta in the upgraded God of War: Origins, scheduled for release Sept. 13.
Many of you already know the tale of Kratos, set in the realm of Greek mythology. After being deceived into killing his wife and daughter by the former god of war, Ares, Kratos denounces his service and, hoping to absolve himself of past sins, pledges himself to the gods of Olympus.
Itching to take on the role of the immortal Kratos once again, we got our hands on an advance copy of Origins, so we could advise all you STACKletes whether it’s worth purchasing for some post-workout gaming.
In Chains of Olympus, Kratos ventures into lands that no mortal has ever seen. According to the press release, “With the world plunged in eternal darkness and the gods rendered powerless, Kratos will ultimately be forced to choose between his own personal redemption and saving the ancient world from certain destruction.”
Ghost of Sparta picks up after Chains of Olympus concludes. “In his quest to rid himself of the nightmares that haunt him, Kratos must embark on a journey that will reveal the origins of lost worlds, and finally answer long-awaited questions about his dark past.”
So how do the two games stack up? Considering they were already best-of-the-best on PSP, combining them for the PS3 was a no-brainer. Honestly, we were sold after seeing the side-by-side screen comparison of PSP originals and their 1080p updates on the PS3 [read more about the game’s HD upgrade].
God of War has always been a favorite among STACKletes. Exploring the brutal realm of the mythological Greek gods is an experience like no other in the world of gaming. If you’re familiar with the original trilogy, then the controls will be no problem for you. Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta have slightly different combat systems, but the basics remain the same. You’ll be able to button-mash to your heart’s content or apply a unique combination of buttons for a lethal attack that will drop any Cyclops or Minotaur in your sights.
The gods await the service of Olympus’ favorite Spartan once again. Will you answer the call and guide Kratos through his two epic quests? STACK has. Come join us!
