Female Heroes to Headline Sci-Fi Flick ‘The Eden Project’
The upcoming sci-fi action flick The Eden Project, featuring two female protagonists, has just been picked up by Sony. The movie is being produced by Tobey Maguire and filmmaking partner Matthew Plouffe via their Material production company. It is scheduled to be the first part of a trilogy.
Reports say Sony paid around $750,000, an indication that the studio really believes in the potential of this female-centric picture. The script was written by exciting up-and-comer Christina Hodson, whose scripts have appeared on the Black List over the last two years, including a creepy screenplay titled Seed, now being produced by Temple Hill.
There is no word on whether Maguire will act in The Eden Project. He has produced several high-profile films in the last decade, including Seabiscuit, on which he served as an executive producer. He is also busy producing another sci-fi movie, the big screen adaptation of Rick Yancey’s YA novel The Fifth Wave.
After the success of Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy and other female-driven action pics like The Hunger Games and Divergent, moviegoers can expect a huge shift in the action genre toward films centering on strong female protagonists.
