Urban Meyer Hired as Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach
Urban Meyer will be heading back to the sunshine state. The Jacksonville Jaguars have made it official that he will be their new head coach going forward. The hiring occurs 10 days after Doug Marone was let go by the organization. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to break the news on Twitter:
<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>Urban Meyer named new HC of the Jaguars.</p>— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) <a href=”https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1349863982228762630?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>January 14, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>
If you follow college football, you know Meyer has been one of the best coaches during his time there. Since his first head coaching gig in 2001, he has racked up many awards and won multiple conferences and National Championships. His most recent stint was in Ohio State, where he was able to win in the College Football Playoffs in 2015. Meyer is coming off a three-year hiatus from coaching after leaving the Ohio State program due to health problems.
This will be Meyer’s first stint in the NFL in his career, and he is going into a rough but optimistic opportunity. The Jaguars finished this season with an abysmal 1-15 record. They have missed the playoffs for the past three years as well. If that’s not bad enough, they have been pretty terrible on both sides of the ball, finishing near the bottom statistically.
On the other hand, they have the number one pick and could take Clemson phenom Quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Meyer has praised Lawrence multiple times over the years and said that he would slightly rate him higher than Justin Fields. With all that being said, Meyer has always been a winner in college, but can he do it in the pros? Nevertheless, the Jaguars organization and fans have a lot to look forward to going into next season.
