Due to a hamstring injury, Cardale Jones wasn’t able to participate in the throwing drills at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine. This was a disappointment for NFL personnel and football fans alike, as many were excited to see the former Ohio State quarterback show off the strong throwing arm that earned him the nickname “12 Gauge.” Lucky for us, Jones was the focus of a recent segment on ESPN’s Sports Science. The data was undeniable—Cardale has a cannon:

Not only would Jones’s top passing velocity of 61 mph have been the best result at the 2016 NFL Combine, but according to scouting service Ourlads.com, it would’ve been the hardest throw at any Combine dating back to 2008. Bryan Bennett threw 60 mph at the 2015 Combine, and Logan Thomas threw 60 mph at the 2014 Combine. Colin Kaepernick, one of the strongest-armed QBs in the NFL, hit 59 mph at the 2011 Combine.
While that result alone was incredibly impressive, Jones also showed the ability to deliver rockets when his lower half was taken out of the equation. From his knees, Jones recorded a blistering top velocity of 53 mph. That number is similar to the top passing velocity many NFL quarterbacks achieve from a standing position. Using the previously cited Combine data, current NFL quarterbacks A.J. McCarron, Tyrod Taylor, E.J. Manuel and Chad Henne all have top passing velocities of between 50 and 54 mph.
