Will Javier Bardem Be the New ‘Frankenstein’?
Javier Bardem (Skyfall) is currently in talks to play the latest incarnation of iconic movie monster Frankenstein. If the deal goes through, the popular actor will join major stars Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe, all of whom have signed on to inhabit Universal’s classic monster movie series. There is also talk that Dwayne Johnson will play Wolf Man.
According to The Guardian, “Universal is currently in development on Frankenstein as well as Bride of Frankenstein. There are also rumours that Mary Shelley’s characters might make an appearance in the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy, which is about to end shooting.”
Little is known about the new Frankenstein movie, except that it is the third project in the studio’s highly anticipated monster universe franchise, which promises to bring back classic movie monsters from Universal’s early years. Mega-producers Alex Kurtzman (Now You See Me) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) will oversee production of the films.
There should be plenty of time to build up enthusiasm for Frankenstein, since it’s not expected to hit theaters until Feb. 15, 2019.
Frankenstein has remained popular over the years, featured in dozens of movies, most recently 2015’s Victor Frankenstein, which focused more on the infamous doctor instead of his creation.
Moviegoers will be seeing a lot of Bardem in 2017. He has four films set for release next year, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, out May 26, 2017. Bardem is now filming an untitled project by Darren Aronofsky in which he is co-starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Domhnall Gleeson and Michelle, Pfeiffer.
