Microsoft Will Struggle to Meet Xbox One Demand
Xbox vice president Phil Harrison told tech magazine MCV that the Xbox One will sell out soon, and replenishing the stock in time for the holiday season will prove difficult.
“There will be difficulty getting stock through until Christmas, but we will do everything we can to accelerate that,” he said. “And then from a software point of view on our services that are constantly upgrading, we will continue to innovate there.”
Video game websites and magazines are still waiting for official numbers, but sales of Microsoft’s console are expected to rival Sony’s PlayStation 4 sales, which reached one million units on its launch date of Nov. 14. GameStop reports that 2.3 million customers who couldn’t get a PS4 at launch have signed up for a next-gen console waiting list. With competitive sales numbers and limited stock, the console war is off to a healthy and interesting start.
Retailers held back Xbox One stock for launch night, but getting either console in time for the holidays may prove challenging.
“From a games and product point of view, we have a very strong lineup for the year ahead,” said Harrison. “So this is really just one day in the calendar and then tomorrow it is back to work. We have some big games to bring to market in the first quarter and beyond.”
