You bought the training app, set your goals and plotted the miles. Did you use it more than once? Doubtful. Every running app available today does essentially the same thing, and few impress. But Six to Start’s new zombie running app, Zombies, Run!, breaks the mold—and then some.
Instead of giving you the same old boring smartphone charts and awkward pep talks, Zombies, Run! simulates an interactive running competition. Based on the name alone, you’ve probably guessed what the game is about. Yes, you are running for your life, trying to escape a throng of post-apocalyptic half-dead zombies.
The app is set up like this: you are a professional runner for an isolated base of human survivors. The app maps out locations and gives you various missions to complete, such as running to find virtual batteries at a virtual supermarket; running to a virtual hospital for virtual medical supplies; or just running from one end of the park to the other. You collect items to grow the inventory for your base, your base improves and spawns new needs, which in turn give rise to new running missions. Sounds more like a console game, right? We think so, too.
The game includes more storylines and poses key choices about who should receive supplies and which buildings should be improved. You can also pick out playlists, listen to audio clips that update your missions, and get an earful of zombie moans if the walking dead are stumbling close behind.
The app has been out all summer—available for about eight bucks from the App Store—but is only now receiving some attention. So if outrunning zombies will give you that extra push to put in some serious miles, download this app. Or wait for the 5K Run for Your Lives to reach a city near you, and do the live action version instead.
