QB Skills and Drills: How to Master the Bubble Screen
The Bubble Screen is the Swiss Army knife of pass plays—it’s easy to deploy and can serve many different functions in an offensive playbook.
For an inexperienced quarterback, the Bubble Screen is a high percentage play that quickly gets the ball into the hands a playmaker. For an offense featuring a high-octane rushing attack, the play can expose safeties and linebackers who cheat up to stuff the run.
As your offense continues to rack up big gains with the Bubble Screen, the play can bait a defense to play more aggressively, making it more vulnerable to a vertical passing attack.
However you choose to use the Bubble Screen, success on the play starts with proper quarterback mechanics.
Bubble Screen
- Set up in shotgun formation with a wide receiver lined up to your left into the boundary.
- Receive the snap, take one lateral shuffle step toward the receiver and throw the ball.
Coaching Points
- Catch and throw the football as quickly as possible.
- Focus on proper footwork.
- Finish down and through with your shoulder to ensure an accurate throw.
- Snap around the ball similar to a double play in baseball when throwing to the same side of the field as your throwing arm.
