Keto is Not as Healthy as You Think
The Keto diet was rated one of the worst diets for 2022. It promotes heart disease through it’s a high fat intake, creates mineral and vitamin deficiency from the extreme restriction of fruits and vegetables. And, a whole host of other serious issues.
The Keto diet is great for treating specific diseases in a positive light. It is usually used in a short term, cyclical way. However, using it as a daily long term nutritional routine in the general population is not healthy. It works great for those who have epilepsy, diabetes and can help with weight loss. But like anything that has success, it gets exploited by the fitness industry. Just because something works in the short term for a specific group of people does not make it good and wholesome for all.
What is Keto?
The Keto diet works by reducing a large portion of carbs out of your diet each day. Usually, the range of consuming carbs is about 30-50 grams a day. Typically, the diet is 70-80% of fat, 10-20% of protein, and only 5-10% carbs. Eating high amounts of fat and limited carbs causes the body to use and break down energy through ketosis.
What is Ketosis?
Firstly, your body prefers to use glucose when it comes to energy. Ketosis is when the body breaks down fats and proteins and creates ketones. These ketone bodies are used as energy. Ketosis usually happens when your body experiences starvation or, in this instance, a low-carb diet.
Ketosis is not a primary process to use energy by your body. Instead, it is a backup energy process that occurs when not enough glucose provides energy. So, specifically, it primarily begins to break down fat stores.
Health Benefits of the Keto Diet
There are some great health benefits to ketosis.
1) Weight Loss
When the body is in ketosis, you feel less hungry because it decreases your appetite. This happens because ketosis suppresses insulin and ghrelin, two hormones that get released, signaling you when to eat because your body is hungry.
2) Epilepsy
Keto was invented and developed in the 1920s to reduce and stop seizures in people with epilepsy. The diet was highly successful in children. Today many studies include children and adults showing that keto significantly reduces seizures. It worked so well that they now use it to help treat other neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
3) Type 2 Diabetes
The Keto diet is very effective at improving insulin sensitivity. Insulin sensitivity is low and gets desensitized in Type 2 diabetics. Today, many studies positively show that the Keto diet is excellent for managing blood sugar. However, the main problem with Type 2 diabetics is usually poor nutrition and food choices, for example, processed foods, oils, etc. So, by just eating correctly, you can eliminate or drastically reduce Type 2 diabetes.
The Negative Side of the Keto Diet
Ketosis is an alternative fuel source used when your body needs to survive. That is why ketones use fat sources and preserve muscle. After fats are broken down, muscles are next to be used as energy without the presence of protein. It is probably the reason why ketones protect the brain very well when in starvation or survival mode. Similar to a spare tire; it is good you have one and very useful, but not advisable for the long term.
Short-term side effects are:
- headaches,
- upset stomach,
- dehydration,
- bad breath,
- irritability, and
- constipation.
Long-term side effects more than 12 weeks:
- Kidney stones.
- A dramatic increase in LDL’s (the bad cholesterol that leads to heart disease.)
- Being deficient in nutrients, such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium, can lead to heart arrhythmias.
- Osteoporosis.
- Gout.
- Hypoglycemia.
It would be promoted more for regular everyday nutrition if it really had such extraordinary benefits. Unfortunately, the success of medications, treatments, and nutritional routines in diseased populations does not make it healthy for all in the general population. These methods and techniques are created to help produce a better functioning body and lifestyle that works best because of deficiency. They are implemented and cycled on a short-term basis to restore normality.
