‘Mr. Holmes’ Offers a New Twist on the Classic Detective
Get ready for an interesting new take on literature’s most famous sleuth in the upcoming mystery film Mr. Holmes.
Actors ranging from Basil Rathbone to Robert Downey Jr. and TV’s Jonny Lee Miller to Benedict Cumberbatch have played Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective over the years, each offering his own unique interpretation. Now it’s Sir Ian McKellen’s turn. The prominent actor, best known for the X-Men and The Hobbit film franchises, plays an aging Sherlock Holmes examining an unsolved case that forced him into retirement.
Following a trip to Japan in 1947, during which he witnessed the devastating impact of nuclear war, Holmes is living a quiet life along the Dover coast. With his brilliant mind beginning to fail him, the old detective must rely on his housekeeper’s young son Roger as he revisits an old case and seeks to unravel much bigger puzzles, including the mysteries of life and love.
The cast features Laura Linney (The Fifth Estate), Frances de la Tour (the Harry Potter franchise), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine), Patrick Kennedy (Boardwalk Empire), and Roger Allam of the TV series Game of Thrones and Endeavour.
The film was directed by Bill Condon, who is best known for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Parts 1 & 2. Condon previously worked with McKellen on the 1998 movie Gods and Monsters.
Based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, the screenplay was written by Jeffrey Hatcher, whose credits include Casanova and TV’s The Mentalist.
Mr. Holmes, which had its world premiere at The Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, will hit theaters nationwide on July 17.
