Rap News Rundown: Iggy Azalea, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Big Sean
Macklemore & Iggy Azalea Tangle Over “White Privilege”
Things turned awkward over the weekend when rappers Macklemore and Iggy Azalea argued over the lyrics for the former’s latest single, “White Privilege II.” The “Thrift Store” rapper talked about how white artists often become famous by appropriating black culture yet fail to speak up when that culture is attacked. He name-dropped Iggy and a few others on the single, drawing the ire of the Australian hit maker, who felt unnecessarily targeted.
Iggy tweeted, “He shouldn’t have spent the last 3 [years] having friendly convos and taking pictures together at events, etc. if those were his feelings.”
They eventually let the argument drop, though some on social media are arguing about whether Macklemore has simply perfected shock rap.
Lil Wayne’s Lawsuit Against Cash Money Continues
Lil Wayne may be snapping pictures and hitting the studio with his previously estranged father figure, Birdman, but that doesn’t mean business has returned to normal. According to TMZ, the two remain entangled in a court battle, and settlement discussions have not begun. Wayne remains adamant that he be properly compensated and Tha Carter V be released.
It’s unclear if their recent reconciliation is linked to TMZ‘s report that the prolific rapper has once again turned to sizzurp, previously having quit it for six months after suffering several seizures. In either direction, however, surely Young Money’s roster is pleased to learn that they may no longer encounter as many live explosives in their attempt to release an album.
C-Murder & 2 Chainz End Beef
If this isn’t the shortest beef ever, it’s certainly the most inconsequential. 2 Chainz and C-Murder have ended their brief entanglement over who birthed the “TRU” movement.
C-Murder released a diss track called “2 Stainz,” calling out Chainz for appropriating the TRU movement and proclaiming himself the originator. The Atlanta-based rapper didn’t disagree; he posted an Instagram praising the former No Limit Rapper, and he even told TMZ, “At the end of the day, I’ve got nothing but love [for him]. I respect Southern artists on they grind. They know how to get them bands up, they know to feed they family. I’m down with all that stuff. [I’m] disappointed that he’s upset. But I’ve got nothing but love for the man. Hope he can come home and take care of his family. I ain’t got no time to kick somebody while they already down.”
Rappers Unite to Contribute to Flint Water Crisis
Outside all of the drama recently dominating the hip-hop headlines, rappers have found a way to donate their profits to abate the water crisis currently affecting residents in Flint, Michigan. Diddy and business partner Mark Wahlberg’s company AQUAhydrate collaborated with fellow rappers Eminem and Wiz Khalifa to donate a million bottles of water to aid residents. Michigan native Big Sean gave $10,000 and helped launched a fundraiser via Crowdrise to bring attention to the children affected.
“It is my hope we can help by raising the money needed to ensure that the children who have been hit the hardest receive the care that they need today and well into the future,” said the rapper in a statement.
Although they’ve been wrapped up in a rap battle in recent days, 50 Cent and Meek Mill contributed to the cause.
