Rory MacDonald Out of UFC 158
Rory MacDonald has withdrawn from his upcoming UFC 158 welterweight fight against Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit, on account of injury. According to reports, the 23 year-old Canadian, who maintains a 14-1 professional record, suffered a neck injury during training.
Johny Hendricks volunteered as a replacement opponent for Condit at the pay-per-view event. “Once we knew Rory had to withdraw, we started looking for potential replacements,” said UFC President Dana White on Monday evening when the news broke. “Johny Hendricks called me and said he wanted that fight, so we’re going to give it to him, a shot at Carlos.”
MacDonald and Condit’s fight was originally scheduled as a UFC 158 co-main event, alongside the headline contest between Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz. It’s unclear how this change to the card will impact the event’s running order, if at all, and whether it will still be billed as the co-main event. The fight was heavily hyped due to the slew of highly competitive fighters currently in the welterweight division. The winner of the fight would have been a likely contender for a title shot against champion St-Pierre.
Hendricks had initially been booked to face Jake Ellenberger at the event. His bump-up on the card is likely to have a huge effect on his title hopes. It remains unclear how long Rory MacDonald will be out with this neck injury.
UFC 158, scheduled to take place in Montreal on March 17, also includes Nick Ring vs. Chris Camozzi and Mike Ricci vs. Colin Fletcher. Check out STACK’s MMA section for the latest UFC news.
