The Lower-Body Lift That Powered Sammy Watkins’ Game-Winning Catch
It didn’t take long for Sammy Watkins to break out with the type of game-changing performance expected from a playmaker for whom the Buffalo Bills moved up in the draft to select fourth overall.
Then again, Watkins assured us before the draft that it wouldn’t take long for him make an impact going against the top cornerbacks and secondary units in the league.
Watkins shredded the Minnesota Vikings defense to the tune of nine catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning grab as time expired in regulation play.
Watkins had a step on the Vikings’ defensive backs all day. On his first touchdown, the Clemson product faked his cover man with a killer stutter-step move to the outside. With the defender turned inside-out, Watkins put his foot into the ground and sprinted upfield to haul in the 26-yard touchdown toss.
Then, with five seconds remaining in the game and the Bills down by 6 points, Watkins beat his man off the line to snag the game-winning ball in the left corner of the end zone.
Watkins is blessed with the gift of speed, but he takes it to new levels by performing lower-body strength and stability moves such as the Barbell Box Lunge. This lift strengthens his legs and core muscles and trains him to maintain balance while performing an explosive movement. A strong core allows Watkins to transfer energy more efficiently to burst off the line and quickly accelerate past a defender.
Watkins showed why he’s fast becoming one of the game’s most dynamic big-play threats. For that, he is this week’s STACK NFL Beast of the Week.
