It looks like Naomi Watts will join Matthew McConaughey for the drama Sea of Trees, which will be set in Japan.
The imaginative storyline involves an American who travels to Japan’s “Suicide Forest,” intending to kill himself. He is interrupted when he meets a Japanese man lost in the forest and decides to help him. The two embark on a journey that is both reflective and dangerous, as they try to find their way out.
Director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) expressed his enthusiasm for the film when he said the script, written by Chris Sparling (Buried), was the best he’s seen in five years. Van Sant confirmed he plans to cast Watts in the role of McConaughey’s wife, who will be seen in flashbacks.
This appears to be the perfect project for McConaughey, fresh off his Oscar win for Dallas Buyer’s Club. McConaughey compared the script for Sea of Trees to haikus and said it gave him chills.
Filming is expected to begin in Japan by late summer.
