Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the screenwriters behind 2009’s Star Trek and 2012’s sequel Into Darkness, will pen the script for the upcoming Star Trek 3. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news last week and confirmed that co-writer Damon Lindelof, who assisted on the last movie, will not be involved in the new film.

There were rumors that the franchise was courting Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (X Men: First Class). But it seems those plans have been laid to rest. What hasn’t died, however, are the whispers about who will direct the film.

Neill Blomkamp’s name was mentioned earlier this year. But the brain behind District 9 and upcoming Elysium has denied he will take the reins, citing a lack of creative control over the final product. Jon M. Chu has also been rumored as a contender; however his representatives told the Huffington Post that he hasn’t even been contacted about the job.

Most recently, Rupert Wyatt’s name was thrown into the pot. This seems fairly credible, considering he already has one successful reboot under his belt. But of course, there’s still a sliver of a chance that J.J. Abrams could return for the job after he finishes up Star Wars: Episode VII. Who would you like to see sitting in the director’s chair?

Actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are expected to reprise their roles. Star Trek 3 doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will likely hit theaters in 2016 to capitalize on the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
