Popular Graphic Novel ‘The Sculptor’ Coming to the Big Screen
A big screen adaptation of Scott McCloud’s critically acclaimed graphic novel The Sculptor is in the works at Sony. The studio recently purchased the rights to the material, which is McCloud’s first work of fiction in more than 20 years.
Prominent filmmaker Scott Rudin, best known for Captain Phillips and The Grand Budapest Hotel, is on board to produce. The movie is about a homeless, destitute artist named David Smith, who makes a deal with Death, agreeing to give up his life in 200 days in exchange for the ability to sculpt anything he can imagine. However, he has trouble trying to decide what to create, and another complication arises when he encounters the girl of his dreams.
The Sculptor, released on Feb. 3, is a hit with comic book fans, who are impressed with how it depicts the deep need of humankind to experience love and create art. The story is reminiscent of the timeless Faust legend, which has inspired many other film, theatrical and literary works over the years.
McCloud, who created the teen sci-fi comic Zot! in the 1980’s, is best known for his award-winning nonfiction books Making Comics and Understanding Comics, which explore the medium.
McCloud posted material about creating this graphic novel on his website, writing, “The Sculptor took five years to write and draw, and I used every minute to make it the best reading experience I could. I like this book a lot and I hope you will too.”
Rudin has several other projects in the works, including high-profile biopics Steve Jobs and Sinatra and a TV adaptation of School of Rock.
