[youtube video=”tn8kIt5wmog”/]Newton told the audience that on a play in which the defense uses single coverage on receiver Kelvin Benjamin, he’ll open the palm of his hand to signal a Fade route to Benjamin. If he gives Benjamin a slant signal, Benjamin will run a slant pattern.
Though Newton displayed his high football IQ in this video, he still managed to entertain the audience. When he explained how he relays the play to “Benji,” he joked that Benjamin is a “hard-headed guy.”
“He’ll be in his own zone, he got that hair in his way,” Newton said. “But that’s a different story.”
Newton’s charismatic personality shines through in the video. Other quarterbacks probably wouldn’t be so eager to reveal how they call plays. Newton is clearly as transparent off the field as he is on it.
