The intense and unusual drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete tells the story of two young boys trying to survive on their own in the Brooklyn projects.

When hard-living Gloria (Jennifer Hudson) and Alice ( Jordin Sparks) are picked up by police, their two young sons—13-year-old Mister (Skylan Brooks) and 9-year-old Pete (Ethan Dizon)—are left to fend for themselves. During the sweltering New York summer, it's all Mister and Pete can do to keep themselves fed and dodge Child Protective Services. They survive on the wits of the resourceful and confident Mister, but how long can two kids hold out alone in the projects?

This movie, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, has been called a "coming of age film." If so, it is definitely one of the grittiest pictures in the genre.

A powerful and compelling trailer (watch it below), recently released, showcases the exceptional performances of Hudson and Sparks, as well as the two talented child actors. Produced and directed by George Tillman, Jr. (Notorious), the film also features Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain) and Jeffrey Wright (The Ides of March).

Michael Starrbury, best known for the 2011 TV movie Black Jack, wrote the screenplay. The music is by Mark Isham and Alicia Keys, who is also credited as an executive producer.

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete hits theaters Oct. 11, 2013.
