The New York Yankees Want Their Players to Be More Like Russell Wilson and Less Like Cam Newton
Just when you thought you’d heard the last of people breaking down every second of Cam Newton’s post-Super Bowl press conference, it comes back into your newsfeed.
As the New York Yankees kick off their 2016 spring training, the organization takes time to teach its players, both new and returning, how to deal with the New York media, a group not known for softball questions or any type of empathy. To teach the boys in pinstripes how to properly conduct themselves under the spotlight, the Yankees brass reportedly showed pitchers and catchers a video of Cam Newton’s Super Bowl press conference as an example of how not to act. They contrasted that with video of Russell Wilson after his Seattle Seahawks lost last year’s Super Bowl on a devastating interception at the goal line, showing how to play the role of upstanding citizen. According to ESPN’s Andrew Marchand:
“During the Yankees’ media training, the Super Bowl is being used to portray the right and wrong way to act. Part of a video shown to pitchers and catchers compares how Cam Newton handled his Super Bowl loss to the way Russell Wilson dealt with his defeat the previous year.”
There have been more than enough terrible think pieces holding up Wilson as the shining light of quarterbacks—in contrast to Newton, the antithesis of how a quarterback and team leader should deal with the media. The Yankees are adding more fuel to that ridiculous fire. Stay tuned for more hot Cam Newton takes for the rest of eternity.
