The buzz is getting loud for Borderlands 3, which as yet has no official release date. Very little is known about the next installment of the popular franchise, but Gearbox studio president Randy Pitchford announced on Twitter: “We are recruiting for next Borderlands. This is the big one. Industry badass? E-mail me: [email protected]. We want to hear from passionate and talented people to help us with next Borderlands game. Check our website!”

Pitchford’s Tweet suggests that the third edition of the role playing shooter game is still in an early stage of development, so little can be known about it today.

Because the game’s first two installments were titled Borderlands and Borderlands 2, it’s natural to assume the third installment will be titled Borderlands 3, but even that information hasn’t been officially confirmed.

That isn’t to say nothing is known about the game. During Take-Two’s recent financial earnings report, 2K’s president Karl Slatoff said the new Borderlands will be released “specifically for next-gen consoles.” That’s bad news for those hoping to snag the title on what are rapidly becoming obsolete consoles.

Slatoff was also quoted as stating, “Looking further ahead, we have a robust long-term pipeline of titles in development, including ground-breaking new intellectual properties and new releases from our proven franchises.”

Gearbox has its hands full with Battleborn, which is slated for release sometime this year. Once Battleborn comes out, the company can switch gears to focus on other projects, and this should lead to reports of development on the next Borderlands.

Development of the third installment is bittersweet when you consider the game’s original writer/creator, Matthew Armstrong, is no longer with Gearbox. Armstrong announced he was cutting ties back in April. In a direct message to GameInformer.com, he commented on the future of Borderlands, saying, “I could leave without damaging Borderlands or Gearbox too much if I did it at this moment, so now was the time. I think Gearbox will do great in the future, and I think Borderlands will stay strong and awesome.”
