Chicago Blackhawks Training Principles
Skaters, no matter their position, have the same hip and pelvis muscular structure. And strength of the core, lower limbs and every other muscle that connects the athlete from top to bottom needs to be the same, whether you’re a forward or defenseman. Yes, forwards are mostly linear in what they do. And yes, defensemen are more likely to pivot by opening up their hip to skate to a corner to chase down a puck, or to be skating backwards then have to open up. But when training any position off ice, we focus on the same motor patterns. Because even if a forward has to execute a move just one time, he may as well be good at it.
