‘Planet of the Apes’ Director Takes Reins of ‘X-Men’ Gambit Spin-off
Rupert Wyatt, best known for directing the smash hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has signed on to direct the X-Men spinoff feature Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. This highly anticipated project will be the first solo film for the popular mutant, known for his ability to harness kinetic energy. He previously made an appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The Cajun-accented New Orleans native Remy LeBeau, who can render objects explosive with his energy, is one of the new X-characters. He was created in 1990 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee.
This adaptation was written by Joshua Zetumer (RoboCop) and Claremont.
In addition to starring in the title role, Tatum is also producing the picture with frequent collaborator Reid Carolin. X-Men franchise producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are also on board.
Although the plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, ComicBookMovie.com reports that Tatum has suggested this film will offer a “different take on the typical origin story, and that the plot will play around with the usual tropes associated with superhero movies.”
Gambit will hit theaters nationwide on Oct. 7, 2016.
