Read and React: The Draft
In recognition of this past weekend’s festivities in NYC, this week’s Read and React is all about The Draft.
The NHL and NBA playoffs kick off in April, but one weekend in the month is reserved for diehard pro football fans hoping to get the next big franchise player on their favorite NFL team.
Unless you’re a former player, you may not be aware of how much behind-the-scenes work goes into each individual pick. But if you want to be enlightened, pick up a copy of The Draft: A Year Inside the NFL’s Search for Talent, by Pete Williams. It offers detailed accounts of what players, agents, and pro teams typically experience leading up to the annual NFL Draft, featuring true-life stories about selecting an agent, declaring pro status, preparing for the Combine, and evaluating talent. Williams describes these and other aspects of the Draft through the eyes of players, family members, agents, pro scouts and others involved in the process. The book also relates how the Draft has evolved over the years.
STACK’s Take: A great resource for any football nut who wants the inside scoop on the Draft—beyond what’s shown in the TV broadcast. There’s truly much more to the event, and it all starts when the whistle blows at the end of every college football player’s final game.
