RGIII Joins Forces With Subway, Unveils Smokehouse BBQ Chicken Statue
This year’s projected #2 NFL Draft pick, Heisman-winning Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, just landed his latest (and tastiest) endorsement deal.
RGIII officially signed on with Subway this week, joining the likes of Subway’s other “famous fans.” Subway celebrated at an NYC event on Tuesday, unveiling a three-foot-high bust of RGIII made entirely of food, including 30 pounds of bread, new Smokehouse BBQ Chicken, olive eyes, a big garlic smile and chili peppers for his braids.
This is not the first time that Subway has created a food sculpture for an athlete: Ndamukong Suh’s and C.J Spiller’s busts were constructed from pepperoni, and Mark Ingram’s statute featured chicken salad.
“It’s a bit crazy, but the statue is pretty cool. We like to call it RGIII and a half,” said Griffin, who worked behind the counter (in full Subway attire, down to his socks) to serve hungry customers during the lunchtime rush. He chatted and laughed with customers, tossing them sandwiches for “sub pass completions.”
“[Subway] is a quick meal, and it’s also filling,” said Griffin. “I’ve loved it … I’ll continue to love it, even throughout this pre-Draft craziness.”
Knowing how critical proper nutrition is for optimal performance, athletes have been quick to join forces with Subway, one of the healthiest and most trusted grub spots for after practice, before a game or on the road. “My dad got on me [about nutrition] at an early age,” says Griffin. “[Eating right] helped me during football season.”
Now that he’s a Subway athlete, RGIII will continue to fuel right for the NFL.
