Guillermo del Toro Developing ‘The Haunted Mansion’ with Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star
A movie based on the Disney theme park ride the Haunted Mansion is being developed by Guillermo del Toro (The Hobbit franchise). The high-profile filmmaker’s new pal and fellow Disney enthusiast Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in the feature.
The screenplay for this supernatural family adventure flick is being written by D.V. DeVincentis, best known for writing the John Cusack comedies Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity.
Del Toro first announced plans for the film at the 2010 Comic-Con, and he has been quietly working on it ever since. With Gosling negotiating for a starring role, things finally seem to be moving forward. This appears to be a passion project for del Toro, who is such a fan of the ride that he has a room in his house dedicated to it.
This project joins the growing list of films inspired by Disney rides. In addition to the hugely popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, other attractions from the happiest place on Earth getting the big screen treatment are Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo.
Best known for his fantasy adventure films, del Toro seems like the perfect choice to helm this picture. His next feature is the horror movie Crimson Peak, out Oct. 16.
