Comedy Series ‘The Pursuit’ Picked up by Yahoo
Yahoo recently announced they have ordered an original comedy series titled The Pursuit. The show follows a group of twenty-somethings as they pursue love, success, happiness and wealth.
This premise is so reminiscent of Friends that Yahoo media chief Kathy Savitt references the hit sitcom in her description of this new series calling it “Friends for the 21st century, in the era of social media.”
Considering the cautious approach Yahoo is taking in their exploration of original programming, it makes sense that they would go for a series that uses a template which has already proven itself to be so successful.
Savitt discussed some of the things they have in mind when it comes to original series, saying: “We’ve talked about originals always as being part of a very bespoke, select group of storytellers that we would work with if the project and the user demand is there. You’re not going to see the same quantity in the slate as with live programming and the digital magazines.”
The Pursuit is being created and written by David Lee (Cheers, Frasier) and actor Chris Bruno (The Fosters). Saturday Night Live’s Beth McCarthy-Miller is directing the series. Yahoo also revealed they are adding a bundle of short form original programming for their digital magazines, and announced they are renewing the live concert series with Live Nation. Additionally, Savitt deflected rumors of Community’s cancellation by talking enthusiastically about the future of the show. Community star Joel McHale hosted the presentation, which was seen as further evidence of Yahoo’s commitment to the program.
