UFC Signs First Female Fighter, Ronda Rousey
The Ultimate Fighting Championship recently signed its first official female competitor, Ronda Rousey. The signing is sure to open the gates to future female fighters looking to enter the organization.
The signing came as a surprise to many MMA fans, since UFC President Dana White had been adamant that women would “never” compete in the UFC. However, after being exposed to Rousey’s fighting prowess, White changed his position.
When the former judo Olympian was signed by the MMA organization, she automatically became their 135-pound women’s champion. Rousey previously competed for the promotion Strikeforce, earning the title of bantamweight champion. Currently holding a 6-0 record, Rousey will mount her first defense in a UFC fight scheduled for early next year. Her challenger is yet to be determined; however, many fighters have the potential to compete, among them Cris Cyborg, Sara McMann and Miesha Tate.
Ronda Rousey and her manager Darin Harvey are expected to make an official statement early next week.
