Imagine how much you could enhance your game if you concentrated solely on developing your gridiron skills instead of spending hours learning hand signals and more than 100 plays before camp. This may become a reality in the not-so-distant future thanks to the ID Coach, a new product that puts all that information on your wrist.
Created by Isaac Daniel, CEO of Isaac Daniel Group, the ID Coach equips players with wristbands featuring protected thin digital screens. A coach sends plays through a cell phone-like device called the personal remote terminal. The plays appear on the players’ high-resolution screens as diagrams with Xs, Os and routes.
“During a game, the crowd is loud, you have coaches sending in hand signals for plays, and it can get distracting,” Daniel says. “With ID Coach, you have the play diagramed right on your wristband, and players understand exactly what to do.”
According to chief operating officer Mike Stibila, “The whole problem of miscommunication and misinterpretation is eliminated because there is direct communication between the coach and the player.”
Although the ID Coach is currently not authorized for use in any football leagues, Daniels is talking with the NFL in hopes of bringing his product to football’s biggest stage. “No disrespect to those who believe in the traditional way of playing football, but the game has changed,” he says. “[Owners have] put billions of dollars into their teams and don’t want them to lose. The ID Coach will only help teams be competitive.”
In addition to the NFL, Daniel’s company is targeting youth, high school and college leagues. When football isn’t your full time job, it can be a challenge to memorize 75 to 100 plays. “We think the ID Coach can be utilized at any level of football,” Stibila says. “Yes, we want to get it in the NFL and the NCAA, but this product can also do a lot of good at all levels, making it easier for football players to participate [immediately] rather than wasting weeks and months trying to learn a detailed playbook.”
The game of football has unquestionably changed with the addition of field turf and coaches communicating with players through their helmets. Don’t be surprised if you see your favorite Sunday stars glancing at small screens on their wrists in the very near future.
