On Oct. 11, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook signed a multi-year endorsement deal with the Jordan Brand. He was previously signed directly through Nike, but that contract recently ended. (For more information on the athlete, check out STACK's Russell Westbrook page.)
Jordan Brand announced the endorsement with fanfare, highlighting Westbrook's unique style on and off the court and his love of the game. With Dwyane Wade leaving to join Chinese competitor Li-Ning (it's true, Dwyane Wade Is the New Face of Li-Ning), Jordan Brand was excited to welcome Westbrook to the family, which already includes established stars like Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony as well as younger players Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kendall Marshall, Jared Sullinger, and Jeff Taylor.
Whether Westbrook will receive his own signature shoe is unclear; however, the Thunder guard has already started wearing Jordan Brand gear: he sported a pair of Jordan Super.Fly sneakers during an exhibition game against the Houston Rockets earlier this month; and he was given an exclusive pair of Jordan Brand x 9FIVE glasses with the Jumpman logo and the inscription RW-LTD Edition.
The new endorsement signals both Westbrook's rising status in the NBA and Jordan Brand's desire to continually reinvent itself by partnering with talented young athletes. Russell Westbrook has been in the NBA for only four years, but he has already made his mark. Last year, he helped the Thunder reach the NBA Finals for the first time. Shortly afterwards, he was named to the 2011-12 All-NBA Second Team and he played for the USA Men's National Basketball team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
