New Nike Air Max+ Coming in 2013

Nike's popular Air Max+ running shoe is getting a makeover! The new and improved model will weigh less and provide greater flexibility. (Check out reviews of the shoe's previous models.)

Releasing in red, black and white colorways, the 2013 Air Max+ will feature Nike's signature Hyperfuse material. Layers are fused instead of being sewn together, reducing the weight of the shoe. The shoe will also feature a mesh upper and improved cushioning.

In light of the makeover, supporters are bound to ask: will the redesigned product be better than its immediate predecessor? The 2012 Nike Air Max+ was created to celebrate the product's 25th anniversary. It carried a $170 price tag, and the company promised an unmatched level of comfort. In general, reviews of the 2012 Air Max+ were positive. The shoe is durable, comfortable and flexible.

So how does Nike plan on improving the design for 2013?

Although the 2013 Air Max+ cannot be tested until January, a side-by-side image comparison with the 2012 model reveals some obvious changes. The mesh material in the upper has been modified. The 2013 Air Max+ will feature bigger holes for more ventilation and a honeycomb pattern with reinforcements. Also, although both versions have Hyperfuse construction and inner sleeves, the soles look much different.

The 2013 Air Max+ promises to be lighter and more flexible than previous editions. And it will have a better sole. One of the few complaints about the 2012 Air Max+ was the bulkiness of the sole. Despite being hollow and filled with air, it seemed clunky, so it was ripe for improvement. In all likelihood, Nike has addressed this issue with the 2013 model.

Nike designed the Air Max+ to simulate "running on air." Throughout a long series of modifications, this concept has not changed. Unfortunately, previous models at times sacrificed comfort and mobility. The 2013 version will attempt to bring the focus back to a lighter shoe with maximum comfort.
